Svadhyaya - Self Study Guide

The second limb of yoga (niyamas) consists of svadhyaya. The practice of svadhyaya includes introspection, self study, inquiry, and studying spiritual texts. Dive into your svadhyaya practice with the prompts below. Start by tapping into your breath, maybe even a short meditation, then allocate about 3-5 minutes per question (answer 1-3 questions at a time).


Keep it simple. Adopt a lens of compassion and non-judgement. Refrain from overanalyzing or criticizing your experience.


What in your life is serving you in expansion? What feels constricting?


Are there certain patterns of relating to yourself + others that feel outdated?


What do you want to create space for in your life / loosen your grip on?


What area in your life is calling for more compassion + patience?


In what habitual ways do you close yourself off, avoid, or soften the edges of your reality? What do you think this pattern is trying to tell you?


What does it mean to live as your authentic self?


What title would you give this chapter of your life? What about the next one?


What things do you want to make room for in your life?


What are you feeling right now? Where in your body is it located?


What matters most to you in life?


What is a cycle that keeps repeating in my life? What may this be trying to teach me?


What limiting beliefs am I wanting to let go of?
